June 24th Serving at the East Village Arts Co-op

From this point I will attempt to keep a more detailed log of our meals, including kind of sort of recipes.

Donations

50 lbs white potatoes
25 lbs box onions
25 lbs box sweet potatoes
big bag o' garlic
10 lbs yellow tomatoes
~10 lbs of dried kidney beans and black beans
Leftovers from the Lady Fest "Ironically Feminist Bake Sale"; Oatmeal raisin cookies, green tea cupcakes, cardamom short-breads, chocolatey granola bars and more!

The Meal

Kidney bean curry with fresh cilantro
Sauce: Fresh tomatoes with skins removed cooked down into a sauce, mixed with garam masala, curry powder, onion and garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Sautée onions in oil until translucent, add tomatoes, spices and beans. Cook over medium low heat until sauce thickens. Garnish with cilantro. As if we measured anything!

Traditional Baked Kidney beans
Kidney beans, veggie oil, diced onion, ketchup, bbq sauce, soy sauce. Bake it at 330 ish until the onions are soft. Sounds gross, tastes amazing.

French Onion Soup
Sweat down a boatload of onions until caramelized. Add soy sauce, red wine vinegar and veggie stock. Cook until delicious.

Mashed Potatoes loaded with Roasted Garlic
Boil potatoes. Mash potatoes with the skins on 'em. Add oil, almond milk, pureed roasted garlic and salt n peppa. Mash a little more. Tada!

Baked Sweet Potatoes
Cube sweet potatoes with skins on. Top with a lil brown sugar, garam masala, salt, pepper and oil. Oh, and a sprinkle of veggie stock for good measure. Bake at 350 until crispy, ~50 mins. Flip every 15 minutes or so.

We served ~35 people, and what little leftovers we had were sent to the Unity Project. All unused produce was handed out during the week. Free Food For All!

The meal consisted of:
-Beet Burgers
-Roasted root vegetables
-Mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy
-Fresh Salad
-Stuffed Bell Peppers
-Vega's delicious caramel cake

The preparation went very smooth, now using the first half hour of the cooking to delegate roles and plan the recipes.

We also had lots of help (Thanks to Robin for the idea of beet burgers, they were excellent!)

There will be a meeting Thursday June 7th at the Infochop at 7:00 pm (670 Lorne Ave.)
Please try and make it!

UPDATE: The 'Pictures' section of the blog now has content. Submissions are always welcome!

January 29th Serving

Thanks so much for another relatively smooth evening of food prep at FNB! On the menu...A delicious melon, pepper & spring-onion salad with dressing...garlic, tomato and bell pepper pasta tossed with oregano....roasted pepper and potato soup...& baked potatoes with a creamy chive dressing. Sean saved the day by making himself available at the last minute for chauffeuring duties. Alice and Margot saved my soup from being a culinary disaster. What a thoroughly cool bunch of people!! Until next time...

January 14th Dundas & Richmond Serving

Thanks to all of the wonderful help we had today the whole process today ended up being a lot of fun and less stressful than we anticipated. We were able to get a lot of donations from the Covenant Garden Market and Nicole was able to drop off two boxes of tomatoes, some peppers, leeks and potatoes off to us from the  Western Fair! We had a lot of help in the kitchen and were able to make a salad, pasta, lentil and vegetable curry, TVP sloppy joes, rosemary french fries, avocado butter-bread and bruschetta, and Laura brought muffins and a sweet potato mash! It was mighty cold out at Dundas and Richmond but we had many people who were interested in having a warm meal and some free groceries. Most of the food got eaten and what did not actually froze! We received some grand donations and one of our vendors actually came by and got to see what we do! It was a lot of fun. For next time: lettuce freezes easily.

December 25th & 26th Serving

The servings on December 25th and 26th turned out really well! We had a lot of support from our friends and community members. We were able to get enough donations for us to add the December 26th serving very comfortably, as well as enough left overs for a week! It was amazing to see all of the food come together: we had various salads, pasta, stuffings, vegetable roasts, 8 mushroom gravy, mashed potatoes, bread, a huge chocolate blackberry cake, cookies, home made skor bars, and so much more! It was so wonderful to cook and eat with everyone. We did learn a lesson though…check the meal calendar and see when organizations are not serving food around holidays! We also got a lot of monetary donations which have been helping in regard to spices and cooking supplies! Thank you everyone for your love and support!
